NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's eldest daughter has lashed out his former media advisor Sanjay Baru, saying that Baru's book betrayed the PM.

Upinder Singh said that Sanjay Baru lied about the timing of the release of the book as he had told her that the book would be released after the elections.

Baru's book titled 'The Accidental Prime Minister – The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh', has a detailed account of the relationship between the PM and the Gandhi family.

Calling the book unethical, Upinder Singh criticised Sanjay Baru saying it was a stab in the back and a huge betrayal of trust.

Upinder Singh, who teaches history at the University of Delhi, told The Indian Express: 'While I am not speaking on behalf of the Prime Minister, we are extremely angry at the exaggerated level of access the author has ascribed to himself.'

She also said the timing of release and the content in the book points to the author in violating Manmohan Singh's trust as well as the access he enjoyed.

Speaking to The Indian Express, she said: 'It is an audacious account with so-called quotes, of even the Prime Minister, which have been recorded as facts. Reported speech has been used as direct speech. Is this ethical?'

She said that the book was nothing but a piece of gossip and a collection of unverified quotes.
Miffed at the timing of the release, Upinder Singh said that there might be some political motive behind the publication of the book.

Sanjaya Baru, alleged that the prime minister allowed his authority to be undermined by Sonia Gandhi, president of the Congress party and standard-bearer of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty.
