Gramsci's Turn to the Superstructures - 5

Gramsci's Turn to the Superstructures - 5

In his Prison Notebooks Gramsci rewrote
Marxist theory on the basis of the core postulates
of historical materialism, and extended the exemplars
in Marx's and Engels's political writings.
He supplied immensely rich theories of education,
the party, the state, ideology, democracy,
and social movements. His theories have provided
an important terrain for political and ideological
struggle. Above all his rewriting of Marxist
theory proved prophetic. Bourgeois hegemony,
constructed in civil society through class compromise
and by ideological apparatuses of the
state, continues to hold sway while socialist
strategy, at least in the West, has given increasing
attention to the war of position.
