Several years later, X-ray images showed
that the galaxy NGC 4319 was connected
by x-ray filaments to both the quasar
Markarian 205 and to another quasar on
the opposite side of NGC 4319.
A single image challenged decades of
theoretical assumption in astronomy.
Stephan’s Quintet is a massive cluster of five
galaxies. Four have similar high-redshift.
The fifth, NGC 7320, has a much lower
redshift, and thus should be much closer to
us than the other galaxies.
Yet there are debris fields and tails around
the low-redshift galaxy that suggest it is
interacting with the high-redshift systems,
which would require that all five galaxies be
in the same vicinity in space.
